PLAN

The purpose of this photo shoot was to promote vintage and retro clothing for Vibe Magazine,the clothes we used were our own as well as from Age UK's Retro Room. The clothes are advertised as warm stylish and affordable. My photos were shot on location in Guisborough, in Bakehouse Square and in several secluded alley ways, these locations were chosen to fit in with the theme of the photo shoot and also because of there seclusion to avoid anyone or thing being in the background of the photo that we id not want there. Although the photos were taken on location, they have been extensively edited, with the upmost care not to edit the clothes or accessories, but the backgrounds of the photos have been changed, to give the shoot a more whimsical and fairytale theme.

Equipment

For this shoot i used a Canon EOS 1100D camera, i experimented with different settings and used TV, Macro, Automatic and Manual focus, and Aperture. I used natural light as all my photos were shot on location, to achieve the right effect i experimented with different angles, heights and locations to achieve the right lighting. 

Props

I did not use any props in my photos, however the jewellery i used in the shoot was borrowed specifically for the shoot, and then was returned afterwards.

Locations and Permission

I carefully considered my locations and time of shooting, and sought the necessary permissions to shoot. My locations were both outdoors and in secluded places however i timed the shots to avoid the lunchtime and after school rush, when there would have been a lot of people passing my locations, because they were both outdoors i had a backup indoor location with a sheltered yard for outdoor shots that was readily available at all times. The yard was my back-up models back yard, i had permission to shoot in her house and in the yard at anytime.

Model Consent

I had permission to shoot my main model, Eve White, and also had permission from my back-up, Marian Jefferson, to shoot her if Eve was unavailable, i made sure that Marian would be available anytime we were shooting, so, were anything to happen to eve that prevented her from modelling Marian would be readily available to step in, at anytime, and anywhere.

Edit and Original

This photo was taken on location in an alleyway, in a secluded part of Guisborough. We took the photo from many different angles and heights, but this was the picture i felt looked the best. The background however was not satisfactory, so i edited in a different background to give the photo a more whimsical and fairytale feel, rather than the urban and dull background on the original photograph. The bright colour of the background also highlights the boots more, which is what the photo is trying to advertise, although the photo is obviously highly edited, the product itself has not been changed, so as not to falsely advertise the boots. I have edited this photo in this way so it will fit the brief more than my original intention of creating a grunge type look in my photos, after re-reading the brief and researching other photos i decided to take inspiration from the fairy-tale type of adverts that are increasingly common, this photo now fits the brief better and now is more appropriate for purpose.

Raw Images

 
 These are my raw photos, they were taken using a range of different camera angles and settings, some were shot on location and some were shot in the studio. Trying to stick to the retro/vintage theme i went for a look something like a "skinhead" but also added in a range of jewellery , and different styles of clothing, such as the fur coat, and Adidas trainers. Some of the raw photos were not appropriate for the brief, however after re-shooting the photos were much better and were more in line with the brief we were given. With the Vibe magazine slogan being "be different be you" i tried to include fashion that was not completely on trend, clothes that are almost unique and are different to what many people would wear. Compositionally i tried to use the rule of thirds and framing in many of my pictures which i feel i was successful in, i feel i used these techniques well to create some good photos. Some of the photos taken were taken using macro mode, and some using a fast shutter speed, these settings i believe have been used well to create the effects that were desired in the pictures in which these were used. The pictures of jewellery were taken outside, on location, however we still used lighting, to pick out the jewels and add definition and to highlight the product, make it stand out from the background, to create this effect we used the flash on the camera and also used a torch, that we shone at the ring and necklace while photographing it, to make it sparkle and stand out against the dull green background. Many of the pictures we took in the studio have turned out well, however to fit in more with the brief i intend to edit them on to a different background.

Test Shots

 These are some test shots that wet took to try out ideas, effects and locations. The shots have been helpful to us in deciding where we will shoot, what we will shoot and how.

Research for Fashion Shoot

For research for our fashion shoot we went into several shops to try and outfits and for inspiration. We have permission from the sops to borrow any merchandise we need for the shoot. We have looked t large winter coats, and 80's styled tops. These products fit in perfectly with the theme of our photo shoot. We chose products in dark colours as we want our photo shoot to be quite dark in colour and theme, we want a grey miserable day, which will work perfectly with the look that we are going for with our models. We viewed a wide range of products including; Macs, Sheepskin/Fur Coats, Polo shirts, woman's tops and anoraks. We found several pieces of clothing that we are intending to use in our shoot.

Health and Safety Preparation

-Health and safety risks/preparation

    -Assess surroundings, put up barrier close to edge to warn people from going to near.

    - Assess ground condition to make sure its not to slippery and no risk of crumbling.

   - From the bottom make sure that you are sheltered or out of the field of falling rocks or pebbles from the cliff face.

   - Make sure that the tide is not due to come in, and make sure that you have an exit strategy incase of a sudden tide.

    -Check weather forecast, if forecast for rain or snow, make sure you have a shelter for you equipment, if forecast for hot weather make sure you have a shaded area to put your equipment to avoid over heating, make sure plenty of water is on hand incase of de-hydration.

   -Make sure all equipment is secured, in a safe place, or make sure that your camera strap is around your neck to avoid dropping and damaging the camera.

            -Health and safety risks/preparation

              -Assess surroundings, be sure to clearly mark the rivers edge, and put up a barrier to make sure no one falls in

               -Be sure to assess ground condition, check for bumps, delves, patches of wet mud.

              -Be sure to check for animals habitats’ and be sure not to disturb them

              -Be sure that all your equipment in=s kept away from the waters edge when not in use, and that it is secured or safe while in use near the waters edge.

              -Check weather forecast, check for flood history and future flood warnings, check for any swamp or marsh land that may be become saturated and dangerous if it rains.

              -Be sure that any one having to be in the water is wearing the appropriate clothing, and make sure that there is a medic on standby incase of any slips in the water.

              -Be sure that if the river is frozen not be on the ice, as it may crack and you may fall through.

3-Woodland Location.

             -Be sure to assess the ground, check for delves, bumps, roots, nettles, poisonous plants, mole hills, badger or rabbit holes, large puddles, animal leavings, small habitats, any burrows or nests.

 -Make sure you clearly mark where you are photographing so that no one wonders through.

-Check that you are not obstructing a cycle path, or hiking route.

            - Make sure that you have checked the weather forecast and have prepared accordingly, for example if it is forecast to rain be sure that you have a shelter in place to shelter both you and your equipment. Also if it is raining then be sure that people are wearing correct the footwear to avoid tripping and or slipping.

             

4- High Building from a height.

-       Be sure that a barrier is set up near the edge of the structure to avoid anyone falling over the edge, or if necessary hook people up to safety ropes so if they do fall they will not fall to their death.

-       Be sure to check on the ground for any tripping hazards such as loose wires, uneven ground, or pipes.

-       Be sure that you are in a safe position and also one that will not obstruct anyone else’s work.

-       Be sure that you are prepared for gale winds of harsh rain, have appropriate clothes on and be sure to have a shelter ready, and a safety plan to evacuate the area in case of a fire or other emergency.

-       Be sure that your equipment is secured on to yourself or onto something to avoid dropping the equipment, as this could cause serious injury.

5-Busy Town Centre in Rush Hour

-       Be sure to stand in a safe location, for example do not stand too close the road.

-       Be sure that you are not obstructing traffic or any public footpaths.

-       Be sure to assess your location for hazards like tripping, for example make sure you know where the curb is.

-       Be sure that if you are photographing business’ or people that you have their permission to do so.

-       Be sure to check the forecast, if it is due to rain be sure to wear appropriate clothing, and to have a shelter ready for you and your equipment.

-       Be sure that you are prepared for any eventuality with the weather for example snow, gale force wind, etc. …

6-Studio Fashion Shoot.

-       Be sure to check for tripping hazards such as wires, or cases for equipment.

-       Be sure that equipment such as lights and fans are not overheated or left on too long.

-       Be sure to keep liquids away from electrical equipment

-       Be sure that any plug sockets are not overloaded and make sure that when not in use they are switched off

-       Be sure that all equipment is clearly marked and is not left obstructing any fire exits, or left anywhere that could cause a tripping hazard.
